{"id":35239,"date":"2021-02-04T12:21:18","date_gmt":"2021-02-04T11:21:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/adventum.org\/covid-and-gambling-the-effects-of-the-pandemic-the-iss-study\/"},"modified":"2023-04-17T09:43:34","modified_gmt":"2023-04-17T07:43:34","slug":"covid-and-gambling-the-effects-of-the-pandemic-the-iss-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/adventum.org\/en\/covid-and-gambling-the-effects-of-the-pandemic-the-iss-study\/","title":{"rendered":"Covid and gambling, the effects of the pandemic: the Iss study"},"content":{"rendered":"\n[et_pb_section fb_built=&#8221;1&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.8.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221;][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.8.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.8.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.8.2&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<p>&#8220;There was a significant decrease in gambling, both land-based and online, during the lockdown due to the Covid19 pandemic restrictions, but there was a spike just after the relaxation of regulations, especially online gambling.&#8221; These are the first considerations at the end of the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iss.it\/news\/-\/asset_publisher\/gJ3hFqMQsykM\/content\/id\/5612441?_com_liferay_asset_publisher_web_portlet_AssetPublisherPortlet_INSTANCE_gJ3hFqMQsykM_redirect=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.iss.it%2Fnews%3Fp_p_id%3Dcom_liferay_asset_publisher_web_portlet_AssetPublisherPortlet_INSTANCE_gJ3hFqMQsykM%26p_p_lifecycle%3D0%26p_p_state%3Dnormal%26p_p_mode%3Dview%26_com_liferay_asset_publisher_web_portlet_AssetPublisherPortlet_INSTANCE_gJ3hFqMQsykM_cur%3D0%26p_r_p_resetCur%3Dfalse%26_com_liferay_asset_publisher_web_portlet_AssetPublisherPortlet_INSTANCE_gJ3hFqMQsykM_assetEntryId%3D5612441\">research<\/a>\n<\/span> coordinated by the<strong>Istituto Superiore di Sanit\u00e0 <\/strong>in collaboration with the<strong>Mario Negri Institute<\/strong>, the<strong>Institute for the Study, Prevention and Oncology Network (ISPRO), <\/strong>the<strong>University of Pavia <\/strong>and the<strong>Vita-Salute San Raffaele University of Milan<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The results<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The practice of <a href=\"http:\/\/solosepuoi.ottopermilleavventisti.it\/gioco-dazzardo\/\">gambling<\/a> from <strong>16.3 percent<\/strong> in the pre-pandemic period dropped during the lockdown period to <strong>9.7 percent<\/strong> and then rose again to <strong>18 percent<\/strong> in the partial restriction period.<\/p>\n<p>Land-based gambling declined from <strong>9.9 percent<\/strong> in the pre-pandemic period to <strong>2.4 percent<\/strong> in the lockdown period, and then recovered to <strong>8 percent<\/strong> in the partial restriction period. Online gaming, on the other hand, increased from <strong>10.0%<\/strong> in the pre-pandemic period to<strong>8% <\/strong>in the lockdown, rising to <strong>13%<\/strong> in the period of partial restrictions.<\/p>\n<p>During the lockdown, among players the median time spent playing increased by almost an hour. In addition, the<strong>1,1%  <\/strong>started playing right in the period of total restriction, while the  <strong>19,7%<\/strong>  of those who were already gambling increased their total gambling activity, and this happened most frequently to young people, smokers, cannabis users, and those who had risky alcohol consumption.<\/p>\n<p>The most played games in all surveys are confirmed to be <strong>Scratch<\/strong> Card for land-based gambling and for online gambling <strong>Sports Betting<\/strong>, <strong>Scratch<\/strong> Card and <strong>Slot Machines<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The champion<br> <\/strong><br>  The study involved a sample of the Italian population aged between  <strong>18 and 74 years old<\/strong>; the data collected are about playing habits during the lockdown period (<strong>April 27-May 3, 2020<\/strong>) compared with pre-pandemic habits and a subsequent phase of partial restrictions (<strong>November 27-December 20, 2020<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With the loosening of restrictions,&#8221; says <strong>Roberta Pacifici, director of the National Center for Addiction and Doping<\/strong>, &#8220;there has been a new increase in the gambling population, to the point where, in the case of online gamblers, it exceeds the pre-pandemic percentage.
