SUMMARY:Beyond what is due
DESCRIPTION:Beyond what is due \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Project sponsored by ADVENTUM Foundation and the Anti-Wear Outpatient Clinic and funded by 8xmille of the Adventist Christian Church. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n The play\n \n \n \n \n \n At the initiative of Office III of Directorate V of the MEF Treasury Department\, the Adventum Foundation participated in Financial Education Month by commissioning the ELEUSIS Association to write a new play on the topic of responsible use of money and usury risk. “Beyond What is Due” is an interactive show that combines storytelling elements and theatrical excerpts\, tracing the history and development of money and usury. The main goal of the staging was to integrate the emotional sphere into learning processes. Combining the rational and emotional aspects to promote content understanding and stimulate the conscious use of money. A wide-ranging reflection that starts from ancient Greece to the present day and tells History\, through the stories of characters. \n“Beyond What is Due” has a surprise ending; in fact\, the storyteller addresses the audience by asking them to lead the young protagonist\, who lives in a family under usury\, toward a choice: go and report the incident to the police or leave with her mother\, as her father would like\, so that he can resolve the situation in his own way. The story will have the ending that the majority of the children have chosen\, then the discarded ending will also be shown so that a reflection\, open to interaction with the students\, can be made later on this issue. \n \n \n \n \n \n Description of activities carried out\n \n \n \n \n \n The play\, staged on Nov. 22 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. After a greeting from the president of the Adventum Foundation\, Franco Evangelisti\, Dr. Lavinia Monti\, Head of Office III of Directorate V of the Treasury Department Ministry of Economy and Finance\, who is responsible for\, among other things\, the MEF’s Usury Prevention Fund\, introduced the topic of financial education and then provided some background to the students on the phenomenon of usury and tools for preventing it. Then the play began. \nThe end of the story presented a choice to the audience: the boys chose not to report. The story had its dramatic ending. Then the other possible ending was staged\, which would lead instead\, after various vicissitudes\, to the liberation of the protagonist family from the scourge of usury. After presenting this second ending the storyteller again asked the audience what they would choose now. But most of the boys did not raise their hands in reporting. \nNext\, Dr. Monti took the floor to highlight some passages from the playjust performed and urge the children to think deeply about the phenomenon of over-indebtedness and usury. Finally\, Professor Roberta Poli took the floor and tried to stimulate a feed back from the audience. Some young people responded by manifesting a doubt that pervaded the room: in reality\, how risky is it to report? Are we sure it will come out? Isn’t this rather in danger of making the situation worse? The teacher prompted the children to reflect on the importance of reporting to get out of such highly problematic situations. Heartfelt thanks for the initiative carried out came from the institute’s head teacher\, professors and especially the students. \nMore than 150 students attended the event\, mostly from high schools\, but there was also a representation of middle schoolers from a neighboring school\, invited for the occasion. From the testimonies collected by the teacher who was our contact person for organizing the event\, the discussion\, upon leaving the theater\, continued in the classrooms. Even during the theater workshop meeting that Eleusis actors conduct at the institute\, several students showed interest and gratitude for the event they were able to attend. \n \n \n \n \n \n Testimonials\n \n \n \n \n \n \n“I really liked it because it was very creative\, it made me understand a lot of things that I didn’t even think existed\, it was engaging.” \n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n“It was very good\, I got excited\, an experience not to be missed\, plus it made me understand many things I didn’t know before.” \n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n“I really enjoyed the theater\, it conveyed a lot of emotions to me especially because of the very good actors. It also taught me a lot about life and to be careful.” \n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n“The show really made people understand what it means to wear\, in an entertaining way. I really enjoyed it.” \n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n“The show was very good\, the concept of usury was explained well. Stories Suspended Between Over-indebtedness and Usury” is a theatrical journey and a lively reflection on a burning topical issue that historically comes from afar and today takes on increasingly pervasive and insidious characteristics and modalities. \nThrough the emblematic stories of characters drawn from the reality of testimonies and investigations\, an emotional and compelling journey unfolds that engages and makes one think\, but which\, above all\, we hope\, will be an example and guide for conscious money management\, a pulsating warning to be alert to the trap of usury\, which takes advantage of the emotional and psychological vulnerability of people in difficulty\, but also a boost to the courage to seek help from institutions when the problem becomes insurmountable and dangerous. \nIndeed\, the difficult economic contingency and the lack of a culture on the responsible use of money have led to an exponential growth of the phenomenon throughout the country. \nFalling into the hands of moneylenders more and more often are artisans\, traders\, entrepreneurs\, and family units for a problem that is little talked about and on which the spotlight is turned only when the crime news deals with it\, for murders\, suicides or violence against the victims. \nEducation in the responsible use of money is\, therefore\, a significant first goal to be pursued with specific awareness and literacy activities\, promoting a social consciousness that helps to understand the causes of the problem and curb it. Starting with the younger generation. \nThis is precisely why the play and its writing are for an audience of young people\, the first to need to understand the magnitude and severity of the phenomenon. In this\, the role of the Ministry of Education\, Principals and Professors is crucial for the involvement of students\, and the theatrical text must be a moment in a broader journey made up of meetings\, debates\, classroom themes\, and in-depth studies in classrooms and schools. \n \n \n \n \n \n The national tour\n \n \n \n \n \n In 2016\, the national tour of the play Nothing for Nothing was included within the “Only if You Can” Awareness Campaign for Responsible Use of Money\, promoted by the ADVENTUM Foundation once again in collaboration with the Anti-Use Outpatient Clinic and funded through the 8xmille contribution allocated to the Adventist Church. \nThe tour followed the following stops: Parma\, Naples\, Milan\, Jesi and Florence. \nFor schools that participated in the theater events in Naples and Florence\, it was possible to hold in-depth meetings in the classrooms in May 2016 with lawyers from the Anti-usury Outpatient Clinic. \nThe schools involved were as follows: \nNaples– Isabella D’Este-Caracciolo Institute– Ippolito Cavalcanti Institute; F. We had been very impressed by the play\, but your efforts\, by activating a follow-up workshop\, did us all a great service. We would like to have the opportunity to meet with you again\, precisely because\, each of you\, for his or her part\, has contributed to the emergence of new ideas for a ‘new’ school that is responsive to the pathways to citizenship so much called for by the ministerial lines. Teachers cannot be satisfied with their own work even if done with so much enthusiasm; we need people like you who really participate in the activity of growth. Cordial greetings from us teachers and all the students who participated in your project.” \n\nFranca Abazia (professor at the Leonardo da Vinci Institute in Florence)

Personally\, I was impressed by the mix of mass media (the TV screens)\, quotes from classic authors\, and touching direct testimonies from victims of usury who managed to come out on top. It was a life lesson for our pupils\, making them aware of the harsh reality of usury\, which\, through “friends of friends” always willing to help those in financial difficulty\, only leads to despair and contempt for these unscrupulous people. We thank you all for the opportunity that you were willing to reserve for our Institute\, (…).” \n\nProf. Lilia Elvira Iona – I.I.S. “ENZO FERRARI” – ITC “Giovanni da Verrazzano”- Rome \n\n“This is to sincerely thank you for allowing our Third Grade students to attend the play “Nothing for Nothing” last May 21. For some of them-the pupils of 3 B-this represented the conclusion of an important journey that began in 2013.For all of them it was a reason for discussion and deepening of an issue that is very current but of which perhaps not everyone is yet fully aware. The teachers also expressed to me their considerable appreciation of the subject and the actors\, who I was told were extremely engaging. (…)”. \n\nProf. Alfi Tesciuba – Deputy Collaborator of the School Headmaster -Middle School A. Priests.
